On NPTE exam day, arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start, bring qualifying identification that matches your registration, and expect a structured check-in and security process. The PT exam then proceeds through five sections of 45 questions with a scheduled 15-minute break after section two.
Read FSBPT’s current instructions before leaving home. Policies can change, and official guidance controls.
Before you travel
Confirm:
- Testing-center address and scheduled time
- Route, parking, or transit
- Registration name
- Qualifying identification
- Permitted food, drink, and medication
- Weather or travel issues
If you have questions about identification or a name mismatch, FSBPT advises contacting Exam Services well before the test date.
Check-in
FSBPT describes a process that can include:
- Storing personal belongings in a locker
- Presenting identification
- Scanning the primary ID
- Taking a digital photograph
- Signing the exam log
- Digital fingerprinting
- Security screening with a metal-detecting wand
Follow the test-center administrator’s instructions. The procedures are routine and apply to exam security.
The phone rule
FSBPT has a zero-tolerance policy for cell-phone access during the NPTE. Candidates may not access a phone during testing or breaks.
Study materials and electronic devices also cannot be accessed during breaks. Store belongings as directed and do not treat the scheduled break as ordinary personal time.
Tutorial
Before the exam, candidates receive a timed tutorial explaining interface functions. Tutorial time does not reduce the overall exam time.
Use it to confirm:
- Navigation
- Marking items
- Moving within a section
- Ending a section
- Break screens
FSBPT also offers a demonstration examination for practice before test day.
Section navigation
The PT exam contains 225 items in five sections of 45. You may navigate and mark questions within the current section. Once you end a section, you cannot return to it.
Before ending:
- Confirm every item has an answer.
- Review high-value flags if time remains.
- Read warnings carefully.
- Do not click through section alerts automatically.
FSBPT specifically warns candidates to read on-screen instructions so a section is not inadvertently skipped.
Notes
Candidates receive an erasable note board and markers. Notes may be taken during timed sections, the board must remain at the desk, and it must be returned at the end.
Use the board for concise pacing checkpoints or necessary calculations. Do not attempt to record protected exam content for later.
Breaks
A break is offered after each section:
- The 15-minute break after section two is scheduled and does not reduce exam time.
- Other breaks are unscheduled and use exam time.
- Breaks can be taken only from the break screen.
- Candidates sign out and complete security procedures.
- Locker access is limited to food, drink, or medication under the rules.
- Leaving the testing site is prohibited except where restroom location requires it.
Check-out and check-in consume time. If the scheduled break exceeds 15 minutes, the exam timer resumes.
If a disruption occurs
Notify Prometric staff immediately if there is noise, equipment trouble, illness, or another testing issue. FSBPT provides specific guidance for disruptions and says candidates should contact it promptly when the environment may have affected testing.
Do not wait until days later to mention a problem that staff could have addressed at the center.
During difficult moments
Use the structure:
- Identify the task.
- Eliminate unsupported options.
- Choose the best supported answer.
- Mark if needed.
- Protect the rest of the section.
Perceived difficulty cannot tell you whether an item is scored or unscored.
After finishing
Return all testing materials, follow checkout instructions, and leave protected content secure. You may write down broad observations about pacing or stamina later, but do not share or reconstruct exam questions.
FSBPT reports results according to its published scoring timeline. The emotional feeling after the exam is not a score.
PTverse can help you rehearse section timing before test day. On the day itself, follow FSBPT and Prometric instructions.
